Onondaga County’s republican chairman is critical of democratic Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner’s decision to accept the role of co-chair of the state democratic committee.
Tom Dadey says the new job will distract the mayor from work she should be doing in her full time job.
“Like a lot of other people, including her colleagues on the Common Council, her democratic colleagues on the council, there’s a bit of surprise with that. She was elected to be the full time mayor of the city of Syracuse. So, it begs the question. Is she running for re-election, or is she more concerned about politics? Is she concerned about governing and leading the city of Syracuse and doing what’s right for the taxpayers of the city of Syracuse, and doing what’s right for the residents and taxpayers in the city, or is she concerned about doing politics?”
Dadey referred to comments from the democratic majority whip of the council, Pat Hogan, who told the Syracuse Post-Standard, “It seems to me it would be a lot of work. I would have thought being mayor of Syracuse is sort of a full-time job.”
Dadey also wonders if the appointment is a signal Miner may not seek a second term. The mayor has given every indication that she does plan to run for re-election in 2013, but says an announcement of that candidacy now is “premature”.
