The man who became a household name in the 1950s, and seriously challenged Elvis Presley’s domnance on the Billboard charts after recording a buttoned-down version of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame”, says he’s now singing the praises of republican congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle, who is locked in a tight re-election race against former democratic congressman Dan Maffei.
Pat Boone, at 78, is the national spokesman for the 60 Plus Association, a group that offers itself up as an alternative to AARP, which it claims has betrayed the nation’s seniors in its support of the Affordable Health Care Act. They claim that has jeopardized the future of senior health care.
The group is chaired by Jim Martin, a one time reporter and former congressional aide who, according to his bio, “He has helped to organize and direct several advocacy groups including the National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC) and the Public Service Research Council (PSRC) (Americans Against Union Control of Government), which opposes public sector compulsory unionism as a threat to elected representation.”
60 Plus launched a bus tour after the GOP Convention in Tampa, traveling through several swing states before its first stop in New York. Martin says the group wanted to support Buerkle as one of their “staunchest supporters”.
In his written statement, Boone says, “I’m still singing at concerts, but I’m also singing the praises of Ann Marie Buerkle. Seniors can depend on Ann Marie Buerkle.”
Democrats say Buerkle and other republicans are trying to force deep cuts and serious changes that threaten the future of Social Security and Medicare.
